Default Internship opportunities for Silver Scholars students

Hello,
I am interested in the Silver Scholars program and was just wondering what internship opportunities are open during the middle year when students are sent off for a year long full-time internship?
Are you restricted to the list found int the Silver Scholars brochure or do you look for it on your own?
Thanks!

Hey there, thanks for your note.

There is a lot of leeway granted to those of us in the Silver Scholars program in terms of structuring the gap year following the first two semesters of classes. As I'm sure you can see from the list you referenced, there is a broad selection of firms that have historically hired Silver Scholars for part or all of their year off; however, this list by itself does not illustrate the array of options available to Silver Scholars nor does it portray the flexibility students have in choosing the scheduling and the number of their work experiences during this year. If you come to Yale SOM immediately after college, you are absolutely eligible to participate in any on-campus recruiting effort open to first year students, and an ever-increasing pool of SOM's committed employers have become interested in integrating Silver Scholars into their intern interview and hiring processes. For instance, I am currently part of the MBA summer intern program at Microsoft, an opportunity that I found through a combination of SOM's first year summer recruiting process and some other contacts. Silver Scholars -- as with all SOM first years -- are entitled to use a combination of career services and personal contacts to find summer and full-time positions; Silver Scholar program advisors are also available to help offer contacts and advice for navigating MBA recruiting routes with limited full-time work background.

Just as wide as the selection of opportunities is the ability to choose a schedule of experiences that makes sense for you. Some Silver Scholars have pursued a single position for the entire gap year; others have pursued a couple formal internships alongside a full year position elsewhere; and some have even pursued four or more separate positions between the end of the second semester and the start of the third. When you matriculate, you should think about what you would like to do for your time away from Yale so that you can coordinate with your career services contact, the Silver Scholars program coordinators, and other SOM contacts to figure out how you can devise a plan for your elective courses and for your job search that makes sense given your interests.

Hope this answers your questions -- feel free to post anything else you would like to know about, or feel free to get in touch with me directly via a private message. Best wishes for an enjoyable summer!
