Hi!I keep hearing students at Yale mention the small class size - what is the number of atudents in a class?

The class of 2008 has 208 students. We have three 'cohorts'. Each cohort of 69 or 70 students takes all the core courses together. 8 weeks into the first year, I know everybody in my cohort and nearly everybody in the class of 2008. (And I daresay everybody knows me).

Reduced to 180 is putting it strongly. Our current class was supposed to be 180 as well. It's a target class size that's used to determine the number of people admitted, and the number of admits is always larger than the target class size since not everyone admitted will matriculate. If more people accept their admissions offers than expected (as happened last year), then the class size will be a bit larger.

Hi,

I came across the a post in Business Week forum and here is an excerpt from the post.

****

"We are very pleased that you have decided to join the Yale School of Management Class of 2008. As you know, when we announced the new SOM curriculum in March, we stated our intention to reduce our first-year class for the upcoming year. This step was taken in order to free up faculty resources for the development of new core curriculum materials, and to ensure the successful implementation of this innovative new course of study. As you also may have heard, the response to the new curriculum, and the corresponding acceptance rate to our offers of admission, was so enthusiastic (an unprecedented 66% higher than last
year) that the Yale SOM Class of 2008 is now larger than the class size for which we had planned.

"This puts us in a unique position. And so we would like to extend you a unique offer. If you are willing to defer your entrance to the Yale School of Management by one year, and exchange a place in the Class of 2008 for a place in the Class of 2009, your first-year tuition will be reduced to half the full rate.

"This offer will be available for the first 30 members of the Class of 2008 who accept it via a registration system that will go live on Wednesday, May 31, 2006. The URL for the special site will be posted on the Class of 2008 website (www.som.yale.edu/2008) at 9 a.m. (EDT) that day. The registration site will close – and the offer will expire – on Monday, June 12, 2006 at 5:00 p.m. (EDT).

"Please consider this offer carefully: If you accept it, you will no longer have the option of matriculating in August 2006. We realize that we are asking you to make a difficult and important decision; we would be happy to answer any questions you may have as you consider this. Please contact us at mba.admissions@yale.edu or (203) 432-6380."

Is that true? If so, we have only 150 seats to compete for. Yale would be very very tough to get in this time.

Please let us know.

It is true that an offer was made to the incoming class to defer so that the class size could be reduced. I don't think many of us took the offer, seeing that our class size is still 28 over the target size.
