Hi All,
I'm an Indian working in US. I'm applying to Yale SOM this yr. my profile - 4yr work exp.( 2yrs in india + 2 yrs in US ) in cognizant. GMAT - 690 (quant-95%,verbal-61%). what are my chances of getting into YALE SOM.
By looking at YaleSOM site, i could make out that there are very less international students, is it true ?
please reply....
Thanks
Vipul
Hi Vipul,
22% of this year's incoming class(of 2008) are international students and this includes a huge Indian contingent of around 15+ students.
As long as you are clear about why you want to do your MBA and why at SOM, and can articulate that well, you stand as much a chance as the next person. Its important to distinguish yourself and once you can weave a coherent story with your background and your future goals, then your nationality doesnt matter.
Good Luck with your applications and let me know if you need anything else.

I have a follow-up question.
When I see a report of top 30 business schools of US, Yale figures in the bottom with 22% international applicants whereas the percentage goes up to 48 for some schools. Is there any specific reasoning behind this such as school policy or inability to attract good international applicants?
You have spent some time on the campus and do you find any area where Yale needs improvement? Also, how do you rate the new curriculum?
I apologize for so many questions but I am just trying to logically strengthen the idea of applying at Yale for an MBA.

Hey maniranjank,
International Students -> Stanford - 30%, HBS - 32%, Yale - 22%
Women students -> Stanford - 35%, HBS - 34%, Yale - 39%
Ok Yale has lower % of international students. But did you know that Yale probably has the highest % of women? I have not checked data for 30 schools, but have provided indicative data comparing with THE top 2 schools (which unfortunately are not the "top 2" schools in the ranking of "top 30" US b-schools) but I am sure there aren’t many schools with 39% women.
My point is that there are many ways you can measure diversity. International students’ % is just one of them. The other meaningful parameters are by gender, professional background (for example there’s a school in north east which boasts of 40% + international students but has 40% + engineers as well!. By the way Yale has only 12% engineers, and you will find that Yale has the best professional diversity among the top b-schools)
What I can tell is that the diversity at Yale is as good as at any other business school. If you have any specific concerns regarding international students at Yale please let us know.
Regarding the improvements required here. The Dean is committed to the new campus in the coming 2-3 years. Shortage of space is probably one shortcoming at the moment, but is being addressed. Otherwise its great. Regarding the new curriculum - its too early to say anything. We are just 6 weeks into the course. Maybe by December we will have an idea of its impact. The recruiters however are extremely enthusiastic about it and so are the alumni.
All the best with your decision.

That was a convincing and conclusive reply. Thank you so much.
